Background and aims
Attachment theory, initially developed by John Bowlby, has become a cornerstone in understanding the role of early relationships in shaping emotional and psychological development. The critical role of attachment in the formation and maintenance of mental disorders, emphasizing how disruptions or maladaptations in early attachment bonds can contribute to a variety of mental health issues is recognized in science and therapy likewise. EMDR therapy can be utilized to treat attachment-based disorders, and to further explore development in this area.
Methods
We conducted a narrative review to describe the current state of the literature focusing on EMDR therapy and attachment.
Results
In the presentation we will present the data and discuss directions of further development.
Conclusions
The application of EMDR therapy to attachment related disorders is still rare. Preliminary evidence shows promising results, indicating a great potential to extend the efficacious application of EMDR therapy to a broad variety of disorders. Clinicians should be aware of attachment related issues in EMDR therapy and know how to deal with these. Therefore video demonstration of EMDR therapy sessions will highlight the value of adding
an attachment related approach to the clinical application of EMDR therapy. This presentation will give valuable information directing research as well as clinically relevant information for
the practitioner.
Learning objectives
1) Understanding of the relevance of attachment related issues in EMDR therapy
2) Being informed on the current status of EMDR therapy on attachment based disorders
3) Being aware of attachment related issues in EMDR therapy and knowing how to deal with these
