Background and aims
Patients with difficulty connecting with emotion are callenging for EMDR therapy. Emotional dysregulation in which hyperarousal predominates involves some problems for trauma processing, but alexithymic patients, with high levels of emotional control or significant dissociation, usually have difficulties accessing memories and letting emotions flow during trauma processing, but also to understand their history and become aware of the most relevant memories.
Methods
The results of a preliminary research on processing styles in EMDR therapy and their influence working with EMDR will be presented. Different clinical vignettes will also be described, showing different patterns of patients with emotional dysregulation in which disconnection predominates.
Results
Emotional regulation is not a single phenomenon, but different types of dysregulation can lead to specific problems.
Conclusions
It is important to differentiate subtypes of dysregulation and disconnection for a more personalized clinical approach.
Abstract topic
Many of the recent findings from the field of the neurobiology have not been translated into clinical practice and are insufficiently contemplated in trauma-oriented therapies. The aim of this presentation is to review recent developments in the field of emotion regulation, connecting these issues with the practical implementation of psychotherapeutic procedures. The focus of this presentation will be the more disconnected patients.
3 Learning objectives
Differentiate subtypes in emotion regulation and disconnection
Integrate concepts from the attachment theory, emotion regulation and dissociation in understanding disconnection
Analyze the processing of emotion regulation in EMDR therapy through the description of processing styles
