Affect Focused EMDR for Adults with Childhood Trauma
10:30 - 12:00Abstract
Authors
Cornil Ludwig1, Van Limbergen Olivier1
1Trauma Center, LĂ©once Roels
Background and aims
This presentation will highlight the importance of working with core affect in EMDR. The aims are twofold: to help participants understand the natural fear of both patient and therapist to touch painful affect considered to be a consequence of childhood trauma, and conceptualizing ways to deal with this normal reaction.
We will provide a road map to find the core affect, which needs to be treated with Dual Attention Bilateral Stimulation, using different entry points, of which memories are the most commonly used.
Methods
The theoretical explanations will be interspersed with case examples, some of which will be subtitled video clips.
Results
At the end of the presentation, EMDR therapists will be less fearful to touch painful affect and understand that the unbearable pain linked to childhood trauma can be accessed in different ways.
Conclusions
EMDR therapists will understand it is critical not to avoid the pain of childhood trauma, which needs to be treated if we want patients to have a lasting effect of our intervention.
The presentation will have widened possibilities to identify and work with the core affect after relational trauma in childhood.
Abstract topic
Affect Focused EMDR for Adults with Childhood Trauma
3 Learning objectives
At the end of this presentation, the attendees will be able to:
1. Understand the importance of focusing on affect as the primary target in working with childhood trauma.
2. Access core affect within relational trauma through different entry points
3. Be less fearful working with the painful affect of patients traumatized in childhood.

EMDR and Systemic Model in ITVT (Integrated Treatment with Variable Team)
12:00 - 12:30Abstract
Authors
Luisa Morassi1, Tiziana Sotgia2
1PhD Psychologist Psychotherapist, Viale XXIII marzo 1848, n. 37, 33100, Udine,
2Psychiatrist Psychotherapist, Viale Duodo n. 61, 33100, Udine
Background and aims
In the treatment of complex systems such as families, it is essential to involve professionals of different types. Keeping a network together (individual, family, area) in integrated work is possible if professionals work as a team. The presentation of a clinical case enables the authors to show the effectiveness of EMDR with Systemic-Relational Psychotherapy within an Integrated Variable Team Treatment (ITVT)
Methods
A mother's request for psychological support allowed the authors to take care of the family (couple with children). Intergenerational trauma was treated individually with EMDR, family co-therapy, drug therapy. The family was also helped by three hospitals. ITVT coordinated work between the parties.
ITVT has two basic elements: integration and variability. Integration is the constant translation and communication of therapeutic processes. Variability is flexibility of interventions, that are constantly readjusted while in progress. Co-therapy coordinates the path. The guideline of ITVT is the AIP model
Results
Over about 3 years, EMDR, family therapy, and the ITVT model enabled the mother to recover from alcohol and benzodiazepine addiction and to resume work, the couple to enjoy a new rapport, the son to recover from psychotic symptoms and to achieve empowerment, the daughter to overcome a block in studies and relationships
Conclusions
The authors systematized the therapeutic flows in the treatment of individual, couple the family by using EMDR, a systemic approach and network fieldwork
3 Learning objectives
Integration of complex systems, networking with distinct but interconnected roles, taking care of each player (patients, families, clinicians) through an inclusive and non-fragmenting system
