Background and aims
EMDR has proved effective not only with trauma related pathologies.
We intend to investigate the reasons of its wide effectiveness.
Once stated the epistemological and clinical validity of the EMDR approach, we intend to explore the possibility of extending this model to the sleeping brain, to integrate dream material into the EMDR intervention, in the perspective of what we call Circular EMDR Intervention.
Methods
We used data from my own EMDR clinical work and from that of forty-eight colleagues I supervised. We, also, referred to data from neuro-research on the functioning of the sleeping brain.
Results
The clinical results improved in duration and quality the more the therapist became aware and gained the command of some fundamental elements of the EMDR approach and the dream material was integrated.
Conclusions
Respect for brain functioning is one reason for EMDR effectiveness. A thorough understanding and not the naïve application of the method is important to improve its results. The brain continues to work during sleep, not losing the dream material is important in a Circular AIP perspective.
Abstract topic
Epistemology, Methododology, Neurobiology of the 24 h brain functioning
3 Learning objectives
We intend to make the EMDR therapist aware of the epistemological validity of the EMDR approach, assumption of its efficacy.
Improve the therapist’s knowledge of the EMDR mechanisms of action to increase the intervention effectiveness.
Extend the EMDR approach to the use of sleeping brain data
